Vietnam’s operators scale up 5G with 11,000 base stations deployed

Vietnam’s three major mobile operators have collectively rolled out 11,000 5G base stations, and the government expects that figure to nearly double by the end of 2025.

According to the Authority of Radio Frequency Management under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the country’s largest operators - Viettel, VNPT, and MobiFone - currently provide 5G coverage to approximately 26% of the population. The current number of 5G base stations represents around 7.7% of the total 4G deployment, reported Viet Nam News.

These 5G sites are now active across all provinces and major cities, forming the backbone of Vietnam’s push toward nationwide 5G connectivity.

Viettel currently has around six million 5G subscribers, with ambitions to reach 10 million by the end of the year. Chairman and director general Tao Duc Thang stated that the company plans to install 20,000 5G base stations in 2025 - aiming to boost data transmission speeds by more than 2.5 times.

VNPT’s mobile arm VinaPhone has around three million active 5G subscribers. Its current strategy focuses on expanding coverage in provincial centres and strategic public locations, such as parks, airports, and administrative hubs.

MobiFone, which serves approximately 2.5 million 5G users, is prioritising major cities and provincial centres in its rollout. The operator has announced plans to deploy 10,000 additional base stations with the goal of covering 100% of communes across the country.
