Amazon is to launch a new linear-style TV channel in the German market, powered by the streaming TV specialist Wurl.
The channel, which went live on 17 April, is described by Wurl as new collaboration with Prime Video to “support the streamer’s growing portfolio of Live TV channels available for Prime members in Germany.” Somehow the term ‘live’ has begun to be used for FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming Television) channels, rather than describing content that is actually being broadcast live.
“The streaming TV market in Europe is experiencing a lot of exciting growth and momentum already this year,” said Keith Bedford, General Manager, EMEA at Wurl. “Prime Video is leading the way in helping to accelerate the industry by bringing premium live entertainment content to audiences – and we’re thrilled to be working alongside them to make that happen.”
Wurl currently powers over four billion monthly hours of viewing on hundreds of unique channels across more than 50 streaming platforms worldwide.
Prime Video is using Wurl’s Global FAST Pass solution that helps publishers launch and monetise channels. Amazon Prime Video will also take advantage Wurl’s capabilities to feature daily event highlights for the Wimbledon tennis championships on the new channel.
Some of the major titles slated for Prime’s schedule include Reacher, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Fallout, Culpa Mia, Maxton Hall and Perfekt verpasst featuring Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka
Live sports will also play a significant role in the channel’s offerings. UEFA Champions League matches will be available for German viewers, while Wimbledon tennis will be shown for audiences in both Germany and Austria.
