Morocco builds local gaming industry with developer hub, training, and a gaming city

Morocco is investing heavily in developing a homegrown gaming industry through a new developer hub, targeted training programs, and a $26 million Rabat Gaming City. The government recently hosted the second annual Morocco Gaming Expo in Rabat, attracting global developers, students, and tech companies to showcase new games, e-sports tournaments, and immersive virtual reality experiences.

With youth unemployment nearing 30%, officials see gaming as a key sector to empower young people, create jobs, and diversify the economy. Mehdi Ben Said, Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, highlighted efforts to attract international game companies while encouraging Moroccan developers to produce original content.

Currently generating over $500 million annually, Morocco aims to double gaming industry revenue by 2030. The global video game market, valued at over $200 billion with 3 billion players worldwide, remains concentrated in East Asia, North America, and Western Europe. Morocco’s initiatives include specialized training in game design, programming, and virtual reality, alongside an industrial park offering incubation, co-working, and production facilities.

Fadwa Bezzazi, coordinator of Universite Mohammed V’s computer science and virtual reality club, emphasized that students are eager to translate classroom learning into careers in gaming, reflecting a future-ready workforce poised to contribute to the burgeoning industry.
