Kyivstar has taken the first step towards implementing the innovative Direct to Cell satellite technology (direct satellite communication with a smartphone). The largest Ukrainian electronic communications operator has successfully connected its core network to the Starlink satellite infrastructure. The Kyivstar SIM card has passed a test for compatibility with the satellite network during laboratory testing. This is another step towards the technical readiness to launch the service in Ukraine.
The integration of the Kyivstar SIM card with the Starlink satellite network took place on the partner's side — in a laboratory in the USA. This confirms that the network recognizes the Kyivstar subscriber, processes signals correctly, and can operate synchronously. Direct to Cell technology in Ukraine will allow users to stay connected from a regular smartphone without additional devices. It will not replace the regular terrestrial network, but will complement Kyivstar's infrastructure thanks to satellites.
The service will be available to all Kyivstar subscribers who have phones and SIM cards with 4G technology support. This innovation is an auxiliary for base stations and will allow subscribers to stay connected in the absence of terrestrial coverage. For example, during a complete blackout or in remote mountainous and rural areas.
Kyivstar became the first company in Europe to sign an agreement with Starlink to launch Direct to Cell thanks to the strategic approach, technological readiness and perseverance of our team. We have been following the development of this technology since 2021. In times of war, when communication is critically important, the company decided to invest in Direct to Cell.
