Ministry of Sustainable Development holds workshop on methodologies for calculating ICT-related SDG indicators under ITU

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, in cooperation with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), convened a national virtual workshop focused on methodologies for calculating and reporting SDG indicators under the custodianship of the ITU. The workshop included the participation of the Mr. Adel Darwish, Director of the Regional Office for Arab States at the ITU and the participation of senior officials and a number of specialists and statisticians from the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and the Information and eGovernment Authority.

This workshop is part of a wider series of workshops initiated by the Ministry to update national SDG indicator data, in line with Bahrain’s national efforts to enhance the quality of data, develop the institutional capabilities align with international statistical standards.

The session focused on key indicators under the ITU’s custodianship, spanning across four SDGs, with emphasis on digital connectivity and access to information and communication technologies. These indicators measure progress in internet usage, mobile network coverage, and digital inclusion essential for tracking efforts to bridge the digital divide.

During the workshop, ITU representatives highlighted the vital role that accurate and updated data plays in supporting innovation, decision making and shaping national policies. They also commended the Kingdom of Bahrain for its commitment to producing internationally comparable data, praising its proactive approach in advancing statistical infrastructure and enhancing data quality. They also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation among all relevant stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of data, reflecting the Kingdom's progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
