Kyivstar reallocates 3G spectrum to boost 4G rollout

Ukrainian operator Kyivstar has announced plans to reallocate 3G spectrum to enhance its 4G network across settlements in the Dnipropetrovsk and Lviv regions, as part of wider efforts to modernise its infrastructure and lay the groundwork for 5G.

In a statement, Kyivstar said several settlements in both regions will benefit from 4G upgrades. The operator emphasised that 3G is an outdated standard being phased out globally, and that its replacement with 4G will offer a significantly improved user experience.

Subscribers in the affected areas will continue to access essential services such as voice calls and SMS, which will now be carried over the 4G network. Kyivstar noted that users can expect “a significant improvement in connection quality,” with speeds up to ten times faster than those offered by 3G.

The following areas are set to see 3G decommissioned:

• Dnipropetrovsk region: Dnipro, Kamianske, Vilnohirsk, Pidhorodne, Slobozhanske, Novomoskovsk district, Kamianske district, Samar (Novomoskovsk)
• Lviv region: Drohobych, Stryi, Truskavets, Boryslav, Sheptytske village of the Chervonohrad community

Despite the ongoing Russian invasion, Kyivstar has continued to invest in its network. In Q1 2025 alone, the operator built 828 new base stations, expanding its 4G coverage to 95.9% of the population.
