GSMA and Samsung team up to improve 4G and 5G voice call quality

Samsung is working alongside the GSMA’s Network Settings Exchange (NSX) and Interoperability Testing services as they look to enable “consistent and reliable voice services across a wide range of operators and regions by default.”

The GSMA NSX is described as a centralised platform designed to streamline and standardise the distribution of mobile network settings from operators to device manufacturers, and allows them to upload, manage, and distribute their latest network settings.

Through it, operators can share IMS-specific settings with manufacturers to ensure service ticks along, and manufacturers in turn can pre-configure devices as per the shared network settings of each operator on the hub.

In this particular project, all Samsung devices using Android 15 or above, including the recently launched Galaxy S25 series, are being equipped to access VoLTE where supported, using operator-defined IMS settings via NSX or defaulting to GSMA Profile #4, says the release.

The point of this is to support a “seamless global VoLTE rollout”, ensuring that things like emergency calling and roaming remain functional as operators sunset 2G and 3G networks in favour of 4G and 5G.

The GSMA and Samsung say they will help operators assess VoLTE readiness through standard tests, and the former will provide interoperability testing services to help operators with VoLTE pre-launch testing.

“Our collaboration with GSMA has strengthened Samsung’s VoLTE compatibility, enabling more stable and seamless voice services across networks and regions,” said Justin Jun, Head of Quality, Head of Group UK at Samsung Electronics. “We’re excited to keep advancing connectivity so users can count on an exceptional mobile experience, wherever life takes them.”

Sianne Ryder, General Manager, Services at the GSMA added: “The GSMA welcomes Samsung's pioneering efforts in enhancing call services. We have invested significant effort into preparing the industry for VoLTE readiness, so this collaboration with Samsung is a significant step forward. As more and more countries phase out 2G and 3G networks to repurpose spectrum for 5G, it is essential to ensure that voice services continue to function seamlessly.

“We look forward to more manufacturers following Samsung’s lead in enabling VoLTE connectivity across networks. By doing this we can significantly improve global connectivity and user experience, ensuring users can benefit from seamless and high-quality voice services, regardless of their network environment.”

Meanwhile Samsung’s is enjoying some success with its latest flagship line of blowers, according to its latest quarterlies. It posted KRW 79.14 trillion in consolidated revenue – an all-time quarterly high apparently – on the back of strong sales of Galaxy S25 smartphones and “high-value-added products.”

It plans to “sustain flagship-centric sales amid weak seasonality” by launching the Galaxy S25 Edge in Q2, and it also says it will expand its AI smartphone lineup through the introduction of what it calls “Awesome Intelligence” to the Galaxy A series.

“The MX Business experienced QoQ growth in both revenue and operating profit thanks to the strong sales of its Galaxy S25 series, which features an advanced Galaxy AI experience,” states the release. “Enhanced cost competency and price declines for some components also contributed to solid double-digit profitability.”

In the second half of the year, we’re told it intends to beef up its foldable lineup by offering a “differentiated AI user experience”, and launch new products with enhanced AI and health capabilities, as well as look at things like XR.
