Equinix to open fifth data centre in Chile

A number of news outlets are reporting plans by digital infrastructure company Equinix to build a $130m data centre in Santiago, Chile. This will be the company's fifth Chilean facility.

Although it hasn’t yet been formally announced by Equinix, there has been an environmental impact declaration filed for the construction of its fifth Chilean facility, which will be known as ST5.

On the basis of this we know that ST5 will be located in Pudahuel, a commune (small administrative area) in Santiago Province that houses Santiago’s international airport.

ST5 will comprise 16 data rooms and office space over two floors spanning 24,420 square metres. The facility will be set on a gross land area of 42,400 square metres.

ST5 will feature 16 emergency generator sets with 3,500 kVA and one 900kVA for the office module. It will also include a 38-hour fuel tank.

Construction of ST5 is expected to begin in May 2025; the first phase is due to be completed in April 2027.

According to the Data Centre Dynamics website, the company already has four data centres in Chile, three of which it acquired from Chilean operator Entel and one of which, ST2, recently began a US$46 million expansion scheduled for completion in early 2025.

Equinix is a major data centre player across Latin America operating a reported 85 facilities in Brazil, Columbia, Mexico and Peru.
