Latin America registers 40mn 5G accesses

Latin America witnessed substantial progress in both 4G and 5G connections, with the latter amounting to 39mn accesses at the end of 2023, according to latest data.

4G connections reached 582mn region-wide, with some 40mn ones added during the year, a report published Thursday by 5G Americas and Omdia said.

“4G LTE is still the strongest technology across the region, although various factors, including 5G handset mass market availability and completion of spectrum auctions will see an increase in 5G coverage, and subscriber growth in the coming year,” José Otero, 5G Americas VP of Latin America and the Caribbean, said in a statement.

Globally, 5G connections are projected to hit 7.9bn by 2028. North America is forecasted to boast 700mn, accounting for 80% of total mobile connections in the geographical region that year.

5G Americas and Omdia tracked 314 commercial 5G networks deployed worldwide as of March 18. The companies project this base to reach 450 by 2025, as new investments in 5G infrastructure materialize.

In Latin America, 39 5G networks and 135 4G ones were in operation by that date, according to the report.
