A prototype of WiMAX and GSM EDGE dual mode phone, produced by a MediaTek handset partner, has also been launched.
The WiMAX and GSM EDGE dual mode phone is the first WiMAX phone design to be supported by a cellular chip vendor. The design is based onMediaTek ( News - Alert) WiMAX chip and MediaTek EDGE baseband processor. According to CT Chuang, the Vice President of MediaTek, the latest WiMAX SoC and integrated GSM+WiMAX dual mode handsets are the beginning of MediaTek’s plan to integrate more wireless technology with future electronics. At present WiMAX industry is in need of a chip company that possesses technology and experience of diverse platforms.
The WiMAX and GSM EDGE dual mode phone is one of the most cost optimized WiMAX handsets available in the market at present. The phone consists of a 2.8 inch touch screen and 5M pixel camera and enables voice over EDGE network and voice/data over WiMAX network. The USB port of the phone can be used for data connectivity with laptops. It is a risk free dual-mode handset, since the VoIP engine of the phone has gone through stringent IOT and field trials.
The MediaTek MT7110 series WiMAX chips have also been announced along with the dual mode phone. These chips have been chosen by Green Packet (News - Alert) Berhad (Greenpacket), a Malaysian KLSE main board listed international technology company.
According to the senior vice president of Greenpacket, James Wang, MediaTek MT7110 series of SoC provides 2x2 uplink and downlink MIMO, transmit switch diversity and Beamforming, which provides the most optimized radio performance to Greenpacket’s customers. He also added that Greenpacket is pleased to be working with MediaTek since they are the only WiMAX vendor that can provide silicon as well as WiMAX software solutions for CPE, USB dongles, handsets and other consumer electronics.
The MT7110 series consists of WiMAX Forum (News - Alert) wave2 compliance chips that support 2.3- 2.7GHz and 3.3-3.8GHz. The MT7119 allows a solution of 2-port Ethernet, 2-port VoIP and an 11n WiFi chip to fit in less than 10x10 cm board. MT7117 is a smaller chip for data with one-port VoIP in an even smaller board. With patented power saving designs, the MT7118 is ideal for modules, handsets and other mobile devices.
