Sierra Leone satellite network iCan TV unveiled

The government of Sierra Leone has welcomed the forthcoming launch of a satellite TV sevice iCan TV, claiming private sector development like this is key to the country's economic development.

Minister of Information and Communications, Alhaji Alpha Kanu, described the entrance of iCan TV in the African country's satellite TV sector as an achievement for both the nation and the government of Sierra Leone, according to local reports.

"We are launching our own local channels in two months' time that will be showing news all over the world," Emerson Saffa, CEO of iCan TV, told The Concorde.

"Our satellite is coming from France and our channels are all legal with quality pictures. We are also planning for SLBC and Star TV to be part of our packages and this will allow people from all over the world to view Sierra Leonean programmes on different channels," he said.

iCan TV will broadcast direct-to-home (DTH) services in Sierra Leone, using the company's own set-top boxes. The service will be available for a SLL 750,000 (US$193) registration fee followed by a monthly subscription of SLL180,000 ($46.33).

"With this development more people can be employed, especially young people who continue to struggle in search of jobs," said Minister Kanu, at the media company's launch event in Freetown.

Sierra Leone has already embarked on a fibre optic project to improve its citizens' Internet connectivity, and is "now on the verge of transforming from analogue to digital [TV] migration", added Kanu.
