Council Says 4G Network Could Be Available By Christmas

Scilly could have 4G mobile access by Christmas. And if it comes, it will allow locals and visitors to surf the web, quickly download files, watch movies or video chat from the street, in a field or out on a boat.

At the moment the islands’ mobile phone network only supports 2G, the second generation of mobile communications and that’s only really good for texts, pictures and voice calls.

We can’t get the next generation of 3G coverage here, so using a phone to surf the net is tricky.

Ofcom says 70% of the UK can now access 4G with an average download speed of 15Mbps.

Council Chief Executive Theo Leijser says the Council has written to all networks and although the Authority has no influence over mobile networks, he says there has been “reasonable traction.”

He told last Thursday’s public meeting that if he were “a betting man” he’d say it would be active by Christmas.
