US-based Syniverse has announced that it is enabling South Korea’s LG Uplus to launch what is claimed to be the world’s first commercial voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) roaming service, featuring HD voice. In a press release the vendor said the development had been made possible by its IPX Network, and the service will reportedly allow LG Uplus subscribers to roam onto the KDDI network in Japan, while also allowing the South Korean operator to expand coverage and services in additional markets. Syniverse notes that its IPX interconnects the world’s networks to make LTE roaming possible, and with nearly 800 LTE roaming routes, the vendor has said its IPX reaches more than 200 operators in 44 countries; this includes 104 ‘direct connections’, which Syniverse claims enable it to launch VoLTE trials and deployments around the globe.
Commenting on the development, Hong Jun Choi, General Manager at LG Uplus, said: ‘Because LTE roaming is the prerequisite to launching VoLTE, Syniverse’s reach to nearly every operator that has launched LTE roaming enables us to achieve the critical reach and coverage our subscribers will demand.’
