Safaricom slashes call costs to South Sudan

Kenyan operator, Safaricom, has stated that it has slashed roaming charges for customers who are currently travelling in South Sudan.

According to the company, the rates have been cut from KES 65 per minute to KES 10 per minute.

The company also revealed that customers making calls to Sudan will now only pay KES 10 per minute, instead of the standard fee of KES 30.

Additionally, the company stated that is has now done away with the fee for receiving calls whilst roaming within South Sudan. The South Sudan roaming rate reduction follows the company’s decision, back in September 2014, to lower roaming charges for subscribers visiting Uganda and Rwanda.

During the course of May 2015, Safaricom released a statement which revealed that the company plans to expand its existing 3G network – in order to cover 80 percent of Kenya’s population. The resulting expansion was set to push its coverage up from the present 69 percent of Kenyans covered.

Safaricom also announced expected plans to roll out 4G services to 13 additional towns by the end of 2015.
