Huawei to set up RM430m data centre

MSC-status company Huawei (M) Sdn Bhd will launch a data hosting centre in Nusajaya, Iskandar Malaysia, by mid-June, an infrastructure which the company has invested about US$120 million (RM430 million) in to store data content from all over the world.

The investment is part of the company’s initiative to expand its international presence especially in Iskandar, which is trying to woo global information and communications technology (ICT) names to the economic region.

Huawei Southern Pacific chief marketing officer Lim Chee Siong said the data hosting centre, which is also known as Asia Pacific Digital Cloud Exchange, is a partnership between Huawei and Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) where the ICT solutions provider will host the content in TM’s data centre.

Lim said the aim of the project is to aggregate multiple contents from around the world into one hub which will allow service providers to have access to all the content from the hub.

The data centre will not only cater to Malaysian service providers but for the whole region as well.

“The data centre is to aggregate all the global contents and applications including video and music content into Malaysia and this will then be distributed to operators locally in Malaysia, as well as operators in countries such as Singapore and the Philippines,” Lim told The Malaysian Reserve (TMR) at the sideline of Huawei Malaysia ICT Roadshow 2015 in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The data hosting service, according to Lim, will be on revenue sharing basis with the content partners. An official statement from Huawei on the data hosting centre will be announced in two weeks’ time.

However, TM spokesperson refused to comment on the issue when contacted by TMR.

Iskandar is fast becoming a magnet for IT companies and data centres. Recently, the Al-Bukhary Group’s Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd said it is setting up an RM180 million data centre in Senai, Johor.

The data centre which is called Synergycloud Data Centre is the company’s fourth data centre with three other data centres located in Glenmarie, iCity and Cyberjaya respectively.

The first phase of the data centre which covered a land area of 2,500 sq ft had already been completed and started operation in December last year.

Puncak Semangat chairman Syed Azmin Syed Nor said the second phase of the data centre is expected to be completed and fully operational in 2017, with an additional RM150 million investment within the next three years.

ICT giant Microsoft Corp was also rumoured to be setting up its data centre in Kulaijaya, Johor. Microsoft is expected to invest between RM5 billion and RM6 billion for its facility which may get a special tax incentive and power tariff to ensure the deal materialises.

In terms of size, the data centre will consume about 100MW of power.
