Singtel to launch 10Gbps GPON pilot for residential customers

Southeast Asia’s biggest telecoms company by subscribers, Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel), yesterday announced that it will soon begin rolling out next generation Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology on its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network, offering fibre customers access to 10Gbps connections. In the pilot phase, due to kick off in the third quarter, the telco says that the new service will be offered to a selected group of customers, ahead of a full-blown commercial launch in the latter part of the year. Singtel says the GPON 10Gbps fibre broadband service will be useful for customers who run multiple 4K video sessions, noting that with the new network, a 50GB high-definition (HD) video can be downloaded within a minute using a 10Gbps line. The maximum bandwidth currently available to customers on a commercial basis is 1Gbps on Singtel’s Unlimited Fibre plan. ‘Over 70% of our customers are on fibre. We believe in constantly innovating and looking for ways to bring them better speeds using the newest technologies,’ said Singtel CTO Mr Tay Soo Meng. ‘Most of these households already have multiple devices connected to their home network. The adoption of this technology will help us meet demand as the number of applications increase and become even more bandwidth intensive,’ he added. Singtel is the currently the leader in the Singapore fibre market, with over 50% market share.
