Gulfsat Madagascar selects Inca transcoder for IPTV upgrade

Gulfsat Madagascar is expanding its Blueline IPTV service with the deployment of a high density high definition MPEG-4 AVC transcoder from Canada's Inca Networks.

The IPTV service is part of a triple-play offer of Internet, digital television and mobile services from the African nation's second largest telecommunications operator. The new transcoder allows the terrestrial broadcast of 65 premium entertainment, film, sport and music channels to Gulfsat's Blueline customers, and will support the delivery of multiscreen video to mobile devices in the future.

"Until four years ago, the island country of Madagascar had no terrestrial TV — only satellite. Now that we have implemented the Inca Modular Series 4430, we can offer our Blueline customers a premium digital TV experience at an affordable price — a tall order in this low-margin business," said Damien de Lamberterie, general manager, Gulfsat Madagascar.

Gulfsat Madagascar is using the Inca Modular Series 4430 MPEG-4 HD/SD transcoder to support HD and SD, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video transcoding of up to 36 HD or 90 SD channels.

Jeff Campbell, CEO, Inca Networks, added: "Inca's software-defined VidiOS architecture powers a solution that provides Gulfsat with a powerful, highly efficient solution that can affordably and seamlessly scale from legacy infrastructures to next-gen mobile services. We are proud that Inca equipment is part of the foundation of Gulfsat's successful digital TV strategy and look forward to growing our business in Africa."
