Minister calls for lower roaming fees

Mozambique’s Transport and Communications Minister is calling on the country’s mobile phone operators to reduce international roaming fees for calls made between Mozambique and its southern African neighbours. Carlos Mesquita says subscribers can pay around USD1 a minute to make or receive a call when roaming abroad, and that this is impacting regional business. He wants phone companies within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to negotiate reduced international roaming fees to help regional integration, Star Africa writes, citing the Agence Africaine de Presse. Mozambique’s three wireless operators – mCel, Vodacom and Movicel – had 15.25 million subscribers between them at the end of 2014, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database.
