Sri Lanka inaugurates free Wi-Fi service

Fulfilling a pledge given in the 100-day plan of the new Sri Lankan government, The government fulfilling a pledge given in its 100-day plan launched a program to provide free Wi-Fi facility to all the people in the country.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Chairperson of Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) Chitranganie Mubarak launched the program, opening the first free Wi-Fi facility at the Colombo Fort Railway Station.

In the first phase free Wi-Fi facility will be available at 26 locations covering 8 districts. Kandy, Colombo Fort, Polonnaruwa, Matara, Jaffna, Galle, Peradeniya, Katunayake, Ratnapura, Dehiwala, are among the first cities to get the free service which was promised by the present government before the Presidential Elections.

Initially the service will be available at a rate of 512 Kb/Sec with a total bandwidth of 100 megabytes. The service will be expanded to 1000 locations across the country.

The 26 public locations are: Fort Railway Station, Pettah Public and Private Bus Stands, the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Floating Market in Pettah, Colombo Law College, Colombo Public Library, Dehiwala Zoo, Colombo Racecourse, Colombo Police Head Quarters, Galle Railway Station, Jaffna Railway Station, Fort Dutch Hospital, Galle Face Colombo, Battaramulla Foreign Employment Bureau, Colombo Museum, Karapitiya Hospital, Ratnapura Museum, Polonnaruwa Base Hospital, Matara Bus Stand, Polonnaruwa Railway Station, Matara Railway Station, Mirijjawila Botanical Garden, Jaffna Public Library, Kandy Railway Station and Peradeniya Railway Station.
