Televisa claims 60% of Mexico pay-TV market

The most recent report from the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) shows that powerhouse Televisa had a hefty 60.1% market share in the Mexican pay-TV industry by the end of the third quarter of 2014.

The Mexican regulator hasn't revealed operator subscriber percentages in the past, but its decision to do so this time around solidifies what most Mexico TV observers already knew: that the Mexican pay-TV market continues to be dominated by a few key players.

DISH Network (owned by MVS and Dish US) is the No 2 player, with just a 15.5% market share. The satcaster is followed by Megacable (14.6%) and Telecable (3.9%).

There is, however, room for any of these competitors to gain ground. According to the IFT, the Mexican pay-TV sector had a total of 15.7 million customers by the third quarter of last year. That represents a service penetration of just 51.5%.

Satellite accounts for the largest access type, 55%, while cable and IPTV account for 45%.

Among Televisa's total number of subs, Sky Mexico owns 39.2%, Cablemás 7.5%, Cablevisión (currently Izzi) 5.6%, Cablecom 4.8% and TVI 3%. These figures do not reflect the company's recent acquisition of Telecable.
