Airtel spends KES2.5 billion on 3G network upgrade

Airtel Kenya, the local mobile unit of Indian telecoms group Bharti Airtel, is investing KES2.5 billion (USD26.9 million) to improve the coverage and quality of its 3G network. IT News Africa reports that sites in Mombasa and Kitale have already been upgraded, while work in the capital Nairobi is currently underway. ‘We have invested KES2.5 billion in this exercise and plan to continue investing significantly in the network to provide our customers with the best possible user experience across the country,’ commented the cellco’s managing director, Adil El Youssefi, adding: ‘The project will increase the reach and coverage of Airtel’s 3G network, enabling our users to take full advantage of what Airtel has to offer.’ Nokia Networks is assisting with the upgrade project, which will also make the Airtel Kenya’s networks 4G LTE-ready.
