Venezuelan pay-TV on steep upward track

Drawing an exponential growth curve when it comes to comparing figures over the last 15 years, Venezuela's pay-TV keeps showing great growth, nearing 64% and 4.65 million subs by the end of 2014.

According to the annual figures published by Conatel, the country's telecom authority, Venezuela's pay-TV increased its subs based by 11.6% compared to 2013, reaching over 30 million people across the country.

The pay-TV explosion over recent years - from 2.5 million subs in 2010 to the current 4.65 million - is mostly powered by the expansion of satellite broadcasting technologies, as direct-to-home (DTH) operators account for 65% of the market, while cable platforms have a 35% share.

During the last two years, the sector has added nearly 1.5 million subs, seeing peaks of great growth in Q1 2014, when it grew by 20.6%. The pay-TV business is in fact one of the largest income generators for the country's telecoms sector, representing 14.2% of total revenues during 2014.

Although Conatel has published no final operator figures, the sector is led by the public company Cantv, followed by Intercable, DirecTV and Telefónica, which has 14.8% of subs, according to Dataxis figures.
