SA moves beyond 1m domain names

South Africa’s central domain name registry last week announced it has registered more than 1-million active .za domains.

South Africa’s central domain name registry last week announced it has registered more than 1-million active .za domains.

The ZA Central Registry (ZACR) confirms that the tally of registered, active domain names ending in .za was 1 001 464 on Friday (23 January).

The ZACR operates co.za, web.za, org.za, net.za and the recently-launched cTLDs (city Top Level Domains) of .capetown (dotCapeTown), .joburg (dotJoburg) and .durban (dotDurban).

“When the first .za domains were registered in 1992, few in the South African Internet industry ever expected the total to ever go beyond 100 000, let alone 10-times that amount. The 1-million milestone represents a great vote of confidence in the world class .za domain name system,” says Lucky Masilela, CEO of ZACR.

“While the overwhelming majority of .za domains are .co.za, it is encouraging to see the great variety of .za domain names that registrants can now choose from. This points to a well-established and effective registry operator that is able to adequately provide for the needs of the local domain name industry,” Masilela adds.
