In a surprise move, the Grameenphone management has said they are considering the proposal by a committee – which represents both employees and management – to disburse the long-disputed profit sharing for the years 2010-2012.

Employees of the mobile phone operator staged demonstrations yesterday demanding the payment of what they were entitled to get under the organisation’s profit sharing rule.

This is the first time that both the employee forum and the management came into a solution to disburse the fund worth Tk420 crore.

A special committee comprising employee and employer representatives yesterday presented a formal proposal to the GP management team for disbursing the transferred money to all 2010-12 eligible employees.

GP employees earlier calculated their profit share to be around Tk420 crore in three years. According to them, GP had earned profit before tax equalling around Tk2,078.58 crore, Tk3,316.5 crore, Tk3,003.97 crore over those three years, while the employees are entitled to 5% of the profits.

In an official statement, they said: “Hence, GP Management team has clearly communicated its intention to seek an amicable solution which ensures payment to eligible recipients from the trustee as quickly as possible.

“Unfortunately, a group of employees had not accepted the necessary lead time and hence have resorted to agitation. GP management team regrets this development, and reiterates its previous commitment to provide an eligibility list for disbursement of the money from the trustee as soon as possible,” said Marcus Adaktusson, head of communications at Grameenphone, when contacted.

GP management also gave the employees a commitment to come back before December 24 with necessary actions.

Employees leader Mia Masud, however, said as per section 240(3) of Bangladesh Labour act 2006, interest will be 75% of declared dividend of share in those years, putting the final amount of share at approximately Tk1,200 crore.
