Coop. among nations in ICTs imperative for mankind betterment: Anusha

Mutual cooperation between Pakistan and other countries in field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is imperative for betterment of mankind, and enhancing peace and prosperity among nations.

Minister of State for Information Technology, Mrs. Anusha Rehman, who is heading a Pakistani delegation in Busan, Korea,

said this while addressing an International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, 2014.

The Conference, inaugurated by President of Republic of Korea, Ms. Park Geun-hye was attended by Ministers, dignitaries and members of telecom fraternity from across the world.

According to Ministry of IT here on Friday, the Plenipotentiary Conference will set-forth the strategic plan for policy making by the Union and will also elect management of Union for the next four years.

The conference also discussed matters pertaining to policy and development of ICT/Telecommunications across the global.

During its stay in Korea, Pakistani delegation met with Deputy Secretary General, ITU, Houlin Zhao who was briefed by the Minister about recent developments and initiatives in telecommunications being taken in Pakistan.

The Minister also invited Deputy Secretary General to visit Pakistan who appreciated Pakistan for the steps being taken for promotion of telecom. Mr. Zhao accepted the invitation to visit Pakistan in near future.

Apart from attending the Conference, Anusha Rehman also held bilateral meetings with Minister and Head of delegations of various countries and organizations which

included Saudi Minister of Communications and IT, Mohamed Jamil Ahmed Mulla, Algerian Minister of Post and Information, Ms. Zohra Derdouri, Minister - Responsible for Telecom of Barbados, Darcy Boyce, Vice Minister for Telecom of Costa Rica, Mr. Allan Ruiz, UAE's Director General, Telecom Regulatory Authority, Mohamed Al-Ghanim, Ambassador, Department of State, USA, Daniel Sepulveda, Chairman of Federal Communication Commission (FCC), USA, Thomas Wheeler, and Secretary of State, Ministry of Administration And Digitization of Poland, Ms. Malgorzata Olszewska.

During the meetings, Anusha Rehman presented snapshot of development of ICTs in Pakistan and expressed her intention for mutual cooperation between Pakistan and other countries.

She highlighted vision of accelerated digitization, the initiative for accelerated setup of technology parks, research and innovation centers, and local manufacturing units. The Minister briefed about possible areas of cooperation with other countries.

Her presence in Korea was acclaimed by fellow ministers and telecom sector delegates attending the conference and appreciated her plans that are being rolled out to take socio- economic benefits of increased broadband connectivity to Pakistani people.

It is pertinent to mention that Minister for IT is also a finalist for inaugural Gender Equality and Mainstreaming in Technology (GEM-Tech) Awards instituted by ITU from this year.

The annual awards will be one of the premier awards dedicated to eminent women in technology policy and practice arena. Her engagements will continue into coming days and are expected to yield significant results.
