Tigo offers OTT apps to boost LATAM coverage

In an attempt to complete the transition from the voice to the mobile data business and increase traffic, Millicom's Tigo is to offer bundled over-the-top (OTT) smart-apps for mobile screens, including streaming video, in Latin America.

Post-paid subscribers will be able to access a group of premium applications offering OTT services such as Qello which offers full-length HD streamed music documentaries and concerts, Tigo Music, Gameloft which enables users to pick four different games a month like Assassin's Creed or Spiderman, Busuu and Smartbooks.

The Tigo brand aims to introduce millions of mobile customers to the digital world of discovery, games and entertainment, meeting customer demand for digital lifestyle adoption while driving further up-take of data and smartphone usage.

Pre-paid subscribers can choose from dozens more free apps designed around entertainment, health, fitness and food, including locally relevant content such as maps.

The strategy, which has already been tried out in Colombia where it has driven the average revenue per user (ARPU) up and strengthened customer loyalty, will be now extended throughout Latin America.

Tigo has also experience a significant rise in the number of customers signing up to data packages, thanks to the brand's FIFA World Cup app, which was a top download in five Tigo markets between June and July.

"Online use on-the-go keeps on growing and now our smart-apps service will reinforce this decisive shift from voice to data use on mobile devices. It's a key part of our strategy to provide a digital lifestyle and promote stronger customer loyalty with valued services and attractive bundles," said Hans-Holger Albrecht, Millicom's CEO and president, commenting on the launch.
