Samsung launches 2 entry-level LTE smartphones

Samsung Electronics has launched two low-priced 4G LTE smartphones, the Galaxy Grand Prime and Galaxy Core Prime, in the Taiwan market targeting the entry-level segment.

The Galaxy Grand Prime, which comes with a 5-inch qHD display and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, is available for NT$6,990 (US$230) unlocked, while the Galaxy Core Prime is equipped with a 4.5-inch WVGA display and 5-megapixel main camera and is priced at NT$4,990.

Both models are powered by a 64-bit, quad-core 1.2GHz processor, supporting all 4G LTE frequency bands available in Taiwan and Cat.4 speeds, which top out at 150Mbps downlink and 50Mbps uplink.

To ramp its share in the local market, Samsung, for the first time in Taiwan, has teamed up with Yahoo Taiwan to promote the two new phones through online retail.

The Galaxy Grand Prime and Galaxy Core Prime sold on Internet will also be able to access to Samsung's range of applications and after-sale services available at physical stores, according to Andy Tu, general manager of Samsung's mobile communication business in Taiwan.

Samsung has been developing its e-business channels since 2010 and has seen its online business grow 25% on year so far in 2014, Tu stated.

Handsets sold through the Internet accounted for 13% of total handsets sold in the Taiwan market in August 2014 compared to 6% on average in 2013, said Tu, adding that online handset sales will continue to grow.
