EE becomes Europe's largest 4G network with 5.6 million LTE subscribers

EE ANNOUNCED on Wednesday that it now operates Europe's largest 4G network, hitting 5.6 million subscribers in the third quarter of 2014.

EE had a lot to boast about in its latest earnings report. The firm added 1.4 million 4G customers in Q3, marking its largest quarterly growth to date and taking its total subscriber count to 5.6 million.

This, EE bragged, makes it the largest 4G operator in Europe, and sees it on track to reach six million customers by the end of the year.

EE claims this growth comes as the British public warm to the idea of 4G LTE. The network revealed that 82 percent of new pay-monthly customers selected 4G plans during the quarter, a third of whom selected double-speed 4GEE Extra.

The firm also credited its bumper numbers to the success of its own-branded 4G products, boasting that the EE Eagle 4G tablet was the best-selling tablet on its network in Q3, trumping the Apple iPad Air.

EE said that it now has 6,203 corporate accounts using 4G, including MasterCard, Reading Council and Scotia Gas.

The firm also revealed that the number of connections on its network via mobile virtual network operator deals, such as with Asda or BT which use the EE network to sell mobile services to customers, is now 3.8 million, up 5.6 percent year on year.

However, despite the growth in 4G users, EE saw its revenues fall by 1.2 percent to £1.52bn owing to regulatory cuts.

Neal Milsom, CFO at EE, said: "We are delivering consistent underlying performance in a highly competitive environment while continuing to face significant regulatory pressure on our revenues."

The firm said it expects its numbers to stay bumper, thanks in part to its picking up 58 ex-Phones 4u stores and the launch of EE TV.

"We are investing to further innovate on behalf of our customers by delivering not just the best network but also improvements in customer service, a range of attractive EE branded devices, shared plans, and soon EE TV," Milsom added.
