TELE Greenland, the country’s incumbent telecoms operator, has opened its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to smartphone users in Nuuk, Sisimiut and Qaqortoq. From 29 September, subscribers to TELE’s Mobile Mikisoq, Mobile Akulleq and Mobile Angisooq plans in the three locations were able to access the internet with 4G-enabled down/uplink speeds of 10Mbps/2Mbps. The cellco notes that although some users are able to access the LTE network automatically, others will need to obtain a new SIM card. Per Svendsen, director at TELE Greenland’s Private Clients department, also disclosed that if the initiative is successful, 4G access will be expanded to pre-paid users.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, TELE Greenland launched its LTE network for USB modem users in the capital Nuuk in December 2013. Subsequently, the network was extended in March 2014 to cover the second-largest town Sisimiut and in June that year the operator deployed the offering for PC and tablet users in Qaqortoq, the most populous town in southern Greenland, and the fourth largest settlement in the country.
