Broadband investment sees UK rank 3rd in connectivity chart

Continued investment in broadband infrastructure has helped the UK rank third on Huawei’s Global Connectivity Index.

The Chinese manufacturer compared connectivity in 25 leading nations, which together account for 78 per cent of global gross domestic product and 68 per cent of the worldwide population.

The US claimed first place in the index ahead of Germany in second, reports ISPreview.co.uk.

Strong mobile broadband penetration - owing to the ongoing rollout of 4G services - fixed subscriber growth and fast average download speeds helped the UK secure its podium spot.

However, relative weaknesses for the UK included telecoms investment and smartphone connections growth, Huawei stated.

William Xu, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at Huawei, said the firm hopes its Global Connectivity Index will not only indicate IT investment and development in various countries and industries, but also serve as a reference for industry policymakers and enterprise decision-makers.

"Looking ahead, Huawei will continue to work closely with industry partners to facilitate closer connections between people and people, people and things, things and things, creating a better connected world," he added.
