Batelco Group CEO to lead operations

Batelco Group chief executive Alan Whelan will assume the lead role for the company's Bahrain operations following the resignation of Batelco Bahrain chief executive Rashid Abdulla.

Mr Abdulla has served the company for 40 years.

'Batelco's board would like to express its appreciation to Rashid for his contributions to operations throughout his tenure,' said Batelco chairman Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

'The search for a new Bahrain chief executive is underway, but such a process may take some time.

'However, we are confident that Mr Whelan, with his vast experience in the telecommunications industry, will competently lead the day-to-day Batelco Bahrain operation until the appointment of a suitable replacement.'

Mr Whelan said that he looked forward to working directly with Batelco Bahrain's management and staff.

Meanwhile, in a separate announcement, Batelco Group said its wholly owned subsidiary BMIC Limited continues to seek payment of $212 million from Chinnakannan Sivasankaran and Siva Limited.

On August 26, Mr Sivasankaran was declared bankrupt by the Supreme Court of the Seychelles.

The bankruptcy order was made following the filing of a debtor's petition by Mr Sivasankaran.

An official receiver has been appointed as the receiver and manager of Mr Sivasankaran's global assets with immediate effect.

BMIC is the largest creditor of Mr Sivasankaran's bankrupt estate and will pursue all legal avenues to recover the outstanding judgement debt from his global assets, the company said.

The company has obtained from the High Court of England both a judgment against Mr Sivasankaran and Siva Limited and an indefinite worldwide order freezing their assets.
