India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) aims to establish a pan-India fiber-optic network by June 2016, a year ahead of the schedule to help facilitate the ‘Digital India’ project, the Economic Times writes. The DoT has sought the views of state-backed telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd on whether it can complete the construction of the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) by that date, rather than the previously stated target of covering 250,000 gram panchayats (villages or small towns) by 2017. The Digital India programme aims to deliver key government services to remote areas via broadband by 2019.
