Radisys’ Telecom Cloud-Ready Platform Wins 2014 INTERNET TELEPHONY NFV Pioneer Award

Radisys® Corporation RSYS -1.18% , a market leader enabling wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced that TMC, a global, integrated media company, has awarded its telecom cloud-ready T-Series T40 Ultra Platform a 2014 INTERNET TELEPHONY NFV Pioneer Award . The NFV Pioneer Award honors products that have demonstrated innovation, unique features and noteworthy developments toward realizing the benefits of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV).

OpenStack and OpenFlow enabled Radisys’ T-Series platforms are a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), open standards-based ATCA solution, pre-configured with the latest Intel® silicon to meet operators’ high-performance requirements for Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and NFV deployments. The T-Series platforms are virtualized using KVM-based and VMWare ESXi hypervisors. Performance in virtualized environment is further optimized using an implementation of Radisys’ vMRF (virtualized Media Resource Function) and vEPC (virtualized Evolved Packet Core) application software.

Designed for applications that require high density and high throughput performance, the T40 Ultra delivers an ideal platform for telecom equipment manufacturers, and their mobile operator customers, to deploy high performance virtualized data plane applications, such as Deep Packet Inspection-based Policy Control Enforcement Function (PCEF), Lawful Intercept (LI), Media Optimization, Security and Parental Control. The T40 Ultra also supports the latest packet processing applications, such as Session Border Controllers and mobile gateways in the 4G Evolved Packet Core (EPC).

Wireline and Wireless Network Operators are seeking to deploy SDN and NFV technologies to take advantage of the benefits of cloud technology proven in the enterprise space, including scalability, increased service velocity and reduced CapEx and OpEx. However, traditional enterprise-class virtualization platforms are not always a good fit for the telecom industry, creating a need for platforms designed to meet the telecom-grade performance, reliability and data throughput requirements for SDN and NFV. In addition, network traffic levels are exploding. A typical smartphone can have 10 to15 active sessions at one time, many of which might be real-time media packet flows. Given this, a carrier-scale deployment of SDN and NFV will require platforms that can process hundreds of millions of data plane flows simultaneously, across thousands of Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs).

Radisys’ pre-configured T40 Ultra platform delivers a carrier-grade solution designed to deliver the high-performance, long-life and five nines reliability essential to the telecom industry. The T40 Ultra can process more than 1 Terabit of real-time broadband traffic, across potentially hundreds of virtualized data plane VNFs and hosted across up to 12 Intel multi-core processor blades optimized with Intel Data Plane Development Kit (Intel DPDK). Mobile operators who deploy NFV solutions using the T40 Ultra will accelerate their ability to introduce new services based on SDN.

“Congratulations to Radisys for receiving a 2014 INTERNET TELEPHONY NFV Pioneer Award,” said Rich Tehrani, CEO, TMC. “The T-Series Ultra has demonstrated true innovation and is leading the way for Network Function Virtualization. I look forward to continued excellence from Radisys in 2014 and beyond.”

“We are honored to have our T-Series Ultra platform recognized as a pioneer in the burgeoning field of SDN/NFV innovation,” said Keate Despain, vice president, business development and platform product line management, Radisys. “TEMS and mobile operators adopting the T-Series Ultra can take advantage of Radisys’ technical and integration services to accelerate their time-to-market and reduce development costs. The T-Series Ultra platform delivers an accelerated path to NFV deployment, providing the capabilities needed for a successful transition of core network functions to the telecom cloud.”

About the T-Series Ultra Platform

The T-Series Ultra includes more than one Terabit of switching capacity and the ability to deliver more than 288 Intel cores, making it the highest performing telco-grade platform for SDN/NFV applications. Ideally suited for data plane applications, it delivers a 50 percent cost-per-bit reduction over 10G systems and provides TEMs with a new R&D model – Infrastructure-as-a-Service, which allows them to focus solely on building their application and transform the R&D expense associated with the platform away from a fixed cost to a variable cost.

  • Fully verified and integrated, ready to use, 40G platform speeds development time

  • Multi-core packet processors, 40G Ethernet switch devices, and high capacity 40GbE uplinks lower cost/bit and increase system density

  • Integrated Platform Management Software enables centralized software upgrades, diagnostic capabilities, and platform monitoring for reduced service costs

  • Common platform improves economies of scale – enables multiple applications with single platform architecture

  • NEBS-ready, highly redundant architecture eliminate any single point of failure and enables five nines (99.999%) network uptime
