Google backs creative coding classes for children

Google has partnered with the Barbican and interactive artists in a series of classes designed to teach schoolchildren how to code creatively.

The DevArt Young Creators course is a 3 week series of workshops lead by interactive artists Zach Lieberman, Karsten Schmidt and duo Varvara and Mar created to teach pupils about the creative possibilities of code.

The sessions, held between 7-25 July at the Barbican, will take groups of 9-13 year-olds through how to code a piece of music, a digital butterfly and a 3D-printed piece of art.

These sessions will be developed into lesson plans in line with the UK’s new national computing curriculum, and distributed to educators by arts and technology organisations.

Teachers and youth group leaders are invited to register their interest through the Barbican.

The artists have created a series of digital art installations made with code, which will be displayed within the Barbican's Digital Revolution Exhibition. The exhibition will be in residence until September 15, after which it will tour the world for up to five years.
