2015 Chevrolet Trax crossover comes to the US with LTE onboard

The compact SUV market continues to perform, and so manufacturers continue to saturate it with ever greater variety. Chevrolet has, for years, offered the Trax in Canada and elsewhere abroad, but never in the United States. That's changing this year, with Chevy announcing that the little 'ute will be coming to domestic dealers.

At a pre-show event ahead of the New York International Auto Show, GM representatives announced that the crossover has now been deemed worthy of sale at home. At its release in 2012 as a 2013 model year, the Trax was said to be unsuitable for the American audience -- despite its cousin the Buick Encore's availability. The sales success of the Encore, plus competition like the Ford Edge, are surely factors in bringing the Trax here.

The updated 2015 model features the Chevrolet family front-end and, on the inside, a standard 7-inch touchscreen playing MyLink. Siri Eyes Free is available, so you can hit a button on the steering wheel to trigger Apple's effervescent virtual assistant, but CarPlay support is not offered -- at least not yet. However, in-car Wi-Fi is available as an option, backed by the OnStar 4G LTE service. Up to seven devices will be able to connect to this roving hotspot.

A four-cylinder turbocharged motor provides 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Chevrolet hasn't announced efficiency figures, but the same engine in the Cruze manages 26 mpg city and 38 highway, so expect similar here -- if you opt for the front-wheel drive version, that is. All-wheel drive will be optional.

No pricing or specific availability is known just yet, except that we should expect to see this car in Chevy dealers by the end of the year.
