Digital Scotland brings fibre broadband to Kirkton of Skene

Kirkton of Skene, a rural Aberdeenshire village, is the first place to receive fibre optic connectivity through part of the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme.

The £410 million initiative is being delivered in two stages – one covering the Highlands and Islands region, and the other taking in the rest of Scotland.

Last month, Buckie on the Moray Firth coast became the first location to benefit from the Highlands and Islands leg of the programme, with Kirkton of Skene this week becoming the first to be included in the rest of Scotland rollout.

Fibre optic broadband infrastructure installed by BT engineers during the project will allow some residents and businesses to access speeds of up to 80Mbps, giving them the opportunity to use multiple high-bandwidth applications simultaneously.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon welcomed the development, hailing it as an "important milestone" for both the people of Kirkton of Skene and the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband partnership as a whole.

"This programme will lay the foundations of a world-class digital Scotland, by extending fibre broadband access to parts of Scotland that wouldn't otherwise be served commercially," she added.
